Albert Murray holds a Bachelors Degree in English and a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling
As a newly appointed Commissioner of DJJ in Georgia, Mr. Murray led the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice from under federal oversight where it had been for more than ten years. This was a major part of his legacy during his nearly seven years of service as Commissioner. He and his department were given special recognition by the Governor in a special called press conference to celebrate the return of this agency to state supervision and oversight.
In the state of Kansas, Mr. Murray was appointed by the Governor for the expressed purpose of rebuilding the juvenile justice system based on juvenile justice reform legislation which was passed the previous year. He began this agency with one employee and a temporary office. Within the next few years he built many state and local partnerships, obtained ACA accreditation for all four of the state’s juvenile facilities, and fully implemented juvenile justice reform. The “Juvenile Justice Authority” was established as a premiere state agency in the state of Kansas. Mr. Murray was the first African American to hold this office and after six years was the longest serving juvenile Commissioner in the state’s history.
Mr. Murray was appointed as Deputy Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Corrections and for just over a year assisted the Commissioner in providing supervision and oversight to 28 state prisons. He participated in the training of prison Wardens, strengthened treatment programs for inmates, and developed a comprehensive strategic plan for the prison system. In his second year in this role he was recruited by the Governor of Georgia to run the juvenile agency in that state.
Within Mr. Murray’s first six month as an appointed member of the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles, he was elected as Vice Chairman of the Board. In the not too distant future, he was elected as Chairman of the Board and served in this capacity for two of his seven years. As Chairman of the Board, this required that he function as CEO of Board operations and was responsible for the supervision and oversight of parole officers statewide. He also supervised other support staff at the Board, presented the annual budget to the Governor’s office each year, and represented the Board on the Governor’s Cabinet.
Mr. Murray was recognized by the City of Atlanta as “Who’s Who in Black Atlanta” for his leadership and positive impact on programs, agencies, and other leaders within the city.
Mr. Murray is certified by the American Correctional Association (ACA) as an accreditation auditor. In this capacity, he has conducted audits of correctional facilities and done other projects in more than 20 states over a period of time to include Alaska and Hawaii. ACA accreditation is sought by prisons, juvenile facilities, and other correctional based organizations that strive for excellence in their operation. They must meet national standards and do so with consistency.
Mr. Murray is an active volunteer in his community serving as Vice Chairman of a local college Board of Directors, and a participant in numerous special community projects. On a personal note, Mr. Murray is married with two daughters, four grandsons, and is also an accomplished musician.
